Top spring/summer swimwear trends for 2012

It may be winter, but snaps of celebrities sporting their latest swimwear outfits have been all over the press of late. Many have flocked to sunnier climates to top up their Hollywood tans, and really, who can blame them? Some have been seen wearing their very own women’s swimwear collection whilst others have been trying out local fashions.

The model and TV presenter Kelly Brook was spotted in Brazil at the end of January, wearing a locally-made black bikini with a rainbow-coloured border and, in Hawaii, Rihanna went for a more sultry look in a cut-away one-piece swimsuit which showed off her curves.

Rihanna’s swimsuit, which was designed by New Yorker Norma Karmali and features space-age-themed silver stripes placed over clear mesh, has since proved a bit of a hit, despite its eye-watering price of £355. The Sun asked some “real” ladies ranging from sizes 10-14 what they thought of Rihanna’s outfit and gave them the opportunity to try on similar styles.

The verdict was positive overall: the suit was described as “flattering” and “quirky” but, even so, the price tag was the major off-putting factor: they preferred to wait until a high street version (and price) – like a reasonably priced swimdress at Very – came out.

The Sun’s fashion editor, Toni Jones, said: “The girls and I were amazed at how flattering the swimsuit looked. Thick lycra pulls in any lumps and bumps and the high cut of the legs makes pins look longer. The pattern is a slimming optical illusion.

The £355 price is steep but proof that if you’re not super-skinny it’s worth spending more on swimwear to flatter your figure.”

And when it comes to choosing flattering swimwear, Brazil may just have it sussed. Kelly Brook’s bikini choice aside, it looks as though a new range of plus-size swimwear could be set to hit the high street soon, thanks to growing numbers of Brazilian swimwear manufacturers who are producing bikinis and swimsuits for larger ladies.

Summer may seem like months away, but as swimwear collections are starting to hit the shops now, it’s never too early to find a swimsuit that flatters your body shape, whatever your size.
